Exploring the civil branches of navies & their material culture

History & Members

The inaugural meeting of the Naval Dockyards Society was held at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, on 14 September 1996, and the constitutional meeting was held at the same venue on 1 March 1997.

We currently have around 150 members throughout the world, including former dockyard and naval personnel, family historians, and academics.

You can read about its history in J.D. Davies (2012). The Naval Dockyards Society: the first fifteen years and C. Clark and C. A. Brebbia (eds). Defence Sites: Heritage and Future. Transactions on the Built Environment. WIT, volume 123, pp. 3-14. ISSN 1743-3509
